DIY air freshener orange peel

  • knife
  • vegetable oil (Canola or Olive oil will work, too.)
  • candle lighter

1. Cut the Orange in half.

2. Run the knife around the edges of the Orange to loosen it from its peel.

3. Scrape out the Orange meat with a fork. BE CAREFUL NOT to remove its inside stem, the white thing that sits in the middle of the fruit. It is kind of tough, but still be careful in removing the rest of the fruit meat around it.

4. Fill the cleaned Orange peel more than a halfway full with your choice of oil. If you want a clean citrus scent, just use vegetable oil because some people swear to Canola oil’s slight fishy smell when heated. Olive oil, on the other hand, has a strong fruity smell.

5. Let the vegetable oil in your Orange sit for a good 45 minutes to let the stem absorb it. This step will help the Orange peel DIY candles to burn well.

6. After 45 minutes, try lighting one of your Orange peel DIY candles. Light it up with a candle lighter because cigarette lighter or a match stick doesn’t stay lit long enough to do the job. Put the lighter close enough to light the stem. If it doesn’t light up, repeat it for another 2 or 3 times.

7. Let the Orange stem rest for a while. It should look like some brown or black and should feel dry to the touch at this point.

8. Relight the stem one more time. Be patient at it may take a few seconds. A slight crackling sound is a good sign, wait for the flame to start on its own.

Safety Tip:

Place your DIY candle in a safe place to avoid any risk. Simply blow it out to shut it off, as you would your regular candle. Do not blow too hard or you will also blow the hot oil outside the peel, which can cause some serious burns.
